AMD FD6300WMHKBOX FX-6300 6-Core Processor Black Edition review

Pros
Cheapest processor out there that overclocks and gives a great performance.
Loads of motherboards still support this architecture and work well with it too.
Easy to overclock using multipliers.
Has tremendous abilities without costing much.

Cons
AMD FX series always fares miserably when it comes to single core performance and the FX-6300 is no different.
Multi-player gaming is not possible on this processor though most games will play well.
Without a dedicated graphics card, you need to invest into a graphics card for a complete system.

so we did a review on the FX 6300 a few months back and our consensus was that it's still a pretty decent CPU for the money but since the releases that review newer cheaper and faster CPUs have come out from both the red and the blue team so how does the FX 6300 hold up in mid 2018 and is it still the choice for those who are gaming on the budget so the FX 6300 came out back in October of 2012 making it relatively old by today's standards it's rocking the

asurim microarchitecture on a 32 nanometer process node which is an evolution of AMD's earlier piledriver and excavator cores the specifications of the CPU on paper at least seemed pretty impressive for being in such an inexpensive package featuring six cores but not really clocked at 3.5 gigahertz 14 megabytes of total cache and compatibility with a relatively inexpensive am3+ socket so on paper this CPU seems great why is it everyone using the CPU

when they could get 6 cores for  well hold your horses for a second because on paper performance is a lot different than relative performance so starting off with the Cinebench score the FX 6300 got a score of 385 which definitely isn't that bad but it's not that great either comparable my Intel i3 8100 quad core processor got a score of 573 so from this benchmark it seems like the ethic 6200 isn't that bad sure it's lagging behind but it's not that far behind right

well moving into the blender BMW CPU benchmark the FX 6300 completed the render in just shy of 15 minutes ok Jake well what if I want to play games I don't need a workstation for that well our gaming benchmarks were variable and incredibly a consistent our test bench consisted of a gtx 1050 TI 8 gigabytes of 1600 megahertz ddr3 ram and a mid-range motherboard that can easily be found  so may having used the FX 6300 for nearly two and a half

years I went into these benchmarks expecting pretty much what we ended up getting battlefield 1 was unplayable and was constantly below 20 FPS in conquest mode no matter how low the settings were and while playing other game modes the framerate improved but stutter made the game completely on for tonight the in game that everyone in your grandma are playing ran at an average of 59 FPS at high settings at 1080p minecraft which is relatively easy to run with

fancy graphics enabled ran at 72 FPS with some pretty frequent stutter when chunks loaded in so yeah from these gaming results the FX 6300 doesn't look too exceptional but keep in mind that this is a six year old processor for this long after release it's still kicking and screaming for sure but it's really starting to show its age when it comes to single threaded tasks Intel's Pentium G 5400 and G 45 60 are honestly a more worthwhile choice and offers a better

performance it not only is cheaper but it's also part of a platform that is more modern and has a much wider upgrade path AMD also offers a newer more modern processors for slightly more money the Rison 3 lineup of cpus are excellent choices for playing games on a budget and outperforms the FX 6300 while yes the Rison processors are more expensive with the cheapest Rison 320 200 g the premium is honestly worth it for more

performance and a modern upgrade path so as for our recommendation is the FX 6300 worth it in 2018 well not really with the release of faster cheaper processors from Intel over the past few months and the inexpensive rise in AP use the price point that the FX 6300 holds is now filled with better more modern options if you have an FX 6300 the time to upgrade hasn't arrived yet but it is definitely approaching soon.

the AMD FX 6300 and this is the second time I'm doing this review are produced one a couple of months ago but Dendy cheap LGA 2011 and also first generation risin parts became available on Aliexpress and the value with the process at the time was just not good enough to recommend but prices have slipped and although the performance is a bit of a mixed bag the FX platform is now cheap enough to give it a second look as always this is more of a celebration of the FX processes rather than a recommendation of going out and buying these parts so you

might have such a system and you want to see what it can do in 2019 so in this video we will of course check out the processor in more detail we will go over the specifications we have benchmarks power consumption figures and of course some gameplay but we will also talk about prices and other components let's start with the process the mainboard can be had for including free shipping the processor and you can get special AMD

only Ram which will not work on internal motherboards this is a 16 gigabyte RAM kit so the whole bundle roughly  for a change this is a processor I bought back in the day aborted in 2014 the appeal was it had six threats and I used it for video capturing and it did a fantastic job the motherboard eventually died the heart of the mainboard I used at the time was that it had a floppy controller but I switched to USB

floppy drives instead so I'm using a different system so the process are not from Aliexpress but you can pick one up  so there's a bit of controversy going on with the cause and the threads there are three modules and six threads and there was actually recently a lawsuit md settled paying twelve million dollars to users that purchased various FX series of processes and the claim was we are basically misleading advertising so there's a shit FPU unit

within a dual-core module and that does not perform the same as having a proper dual core module where you have two dedicated FP use so we're getting a decent amount of threads we're also getting a decent enough clock speed 3.5 gigahertz is the base clock maximum turbo is 4.1 gigahertz and in games we see in clock speeds of 3.8 gigahertz we've got a 95 watt TDP the CPU used to cost  at launch so that was actually a pretty decent price for cooling him using a 125 what Box cooler for an AMD phenom 2 processor worked

great in the project and once again I'm using the icy graphite thermal pad this is the larger version 40 by 40 millimeters and also worked really well for this project we saw very decent temperatures so let's have a closer look at the mainboard this is a micro ATX Asus m5 a 7/8 L m LX for A+ and aborted  including shipping we have a 760 g Northbridge with integrated graphics haven't tested it it might not actually work under Windows 10 not

sure about that but the main board is compatible with the FX processes and the 6300 is officially supported so we have a PCI Express 16 x + 1 X slot as well as a PCI slot there are 4 SATA 2 ports we have two memory modules for ddr3 dual channel configuration at the back we have two ps2 there's a serial VGA for USB 2 Gigabit Ethernet and audio for a budget name but the bias is surprisingly decent we have options for overclocking including raising the voltage all

the tests in this video however are done with the stock BIOS defaults and a quick word about the RAM we can use what's called a MIDI only memory these are cheaper basically and only work for MD mainboards and you're looking  for a 16 gigabyte kit with ddr3 1600 for the graphics card we've got an md radeon IX 580 with 8 gigabytes of vram to make sure we're not bottlenecked by the video card we are testing most of the games at 720p so just to keep that in

mind for storage I'm using a one terabyte King spec SSD so far this has been serving me pretty well haven't had any issues and it's large enough to fit all the games for testing and we are once again using the deep cool DQ 650 and power supply I'll make sure you use the power supply in most of my reviews so we can compare the power consumption figures so I measured 54 what idle this is this is the entire system sitting on the desktop and running Cinebench I saw a load of

136 watts and now let's have a look at some benchmark results Cinebench r15 we're getting 414 in Cinebench our 20 we're getting 882 in firestrike we're getting an overall score of 8000 351 with 14,000 640 graphics and 5,000 583 for physics I also ran the blender benchmark and it took 1 hour and 32 minutes and now let's have a look at some gameplay we begin with games that are heavily optimized for weak processes using the Vulcan API first up we have doom so running at 720p to make sure that the video card is not holding anything back we have

configured the Vulkan API high detail preset and we're getting over 100 FPS so this is how it should be done it's a good-looking game nice and responsive and we're getting a very decent performance we're getting a similar experience with strange Brigade this is a newer title once again 720p with the high detail preset and also using the Vulcan API and same experience compared to doom we're getting over 100 FPS so another game that runs still really well on the FX 6300 older games also run really well here we have dirt 3 this one is configured to run at

1080p with ultra details and 4x anti-aliasing and yeah over 100 FPS so if all the games is your thing then the FX platform is fantastic it is still compatible with Windows XP so there are aspects of using it for retro gaming as well Pitman 2 is an interesting game I tested two levels night call comes first and this one seems to be quite playable we're getting over 60 fps throughout the entire level but when we try something more demanding like the finish line level here we have a lot of our pcs running around and the demand on the processor is just totally

different we are yeah sometimes struggling to get a 30 FPS so this is more a console experience and there are quite nasty frame time spikes as well I also tested project cars - this is the demo version we are running at 720p with a mix of yeah high details mostly and are tested two tracks first up is the formula 1 track this one doesn't run too bad we are getting consistently over 60fps but there's a second track where there's some rain so there's a wetter simulation thread or process running in the background and here the performance is not quite as good we're

getting over 60fps just over 60 fps most of the time but there are a few dips below I also tested shadow of the Tomb Raider running at 720p with deduct x12 Apr seems to be very playable over 60 fps so this is a game that doesn't seem to require a very strong processor in terms of what the threats can do it seems to be able to take advantage of all the threats that the FX 6300 has now the performance shown in the video is only a section of the game so later aspects of the

game might be more demanding so just keep that in mind I then tried to search this game runs at 720p also with the high details preset and it runs at just under 60 fps most of the time so not quite that smooth PC gaming experience but at least we're getting performance similar to that of a console so if you put a link or a frame cap on there running at 30fps you will get a very similar experience next up we have fault not running at 720p we've all details maxed out epic

details and seems to be quite playable we do get nasty frame time spikes however we've stutters here and there but most of the time this is actually quite playable and finally apex legends running at 720p with maximum details most of the time we're getting just over 60 FPS so definitely not a machine you want to run this game at if you've got a high refresh rate monitor but if you only have a 60 Hertz panel if you have tweaked the details a little bit you will be able

to enjoy this game even on the old FX 6300 so guys let's summarize this review the FX 6300 is really my favorite FX processor it's got a nice mix a good balance of a low price having six threats and a high enough clock speed and it also supports modern CPU instructions that some games use so that means pretty much every game will at least run some games might not run very well but tweaking the details here and there they should still be playable at least if you

have aim for 30fps experience the price is also very good  including free postage you can get the mainboard CPU and 16 gigabytes of RAM but we've cheap parts you have to be very careful with prices often spending another money can get you something much better and just around the corner we have first generation arising parts so if you spend you get an a320 mainboard arisin v 1400 you're looking at eight

gigabytes of ddr4 ram so yes that is a little bit more money but you are getting a much more modern platform that will definitely outperform the FX 6300 this of course also the LGA 2011 platform here you can get a motherboard  you can get the six core 2630 v2  and ddr3 registered ECC memory is also dirt cheap with the prices for the FX parts now having come down it is quite an interesting platform is it something I would

recommend you to rush out and buy probably not so this review is once again just an experiment seeing what's possible maybe you've got some parts lying around yeah or the mono the mainboard failed and you're not sure if it's worth getting a replacement main board we saw that many games will still run fine on this platform but if you try the latest and greatest games then the performance will suffer and you have to settle for a 30 FPS experience so all up this is

a very interesting processor also interesting in CPU history with the lawsuit and modules and cores and all that confusion with the shared resources and yeah a favorite processor of mine when aborted in 2014 I was really happy with the performance it lasted me several years until the mainboard failed so yeah I definitely have a soft spot for this processor and I think the FX 6300 is a really nice sweet spot and I would pick it over one of the 8000 series models for

example and of course that's pretty much it for this review as always eager to hear your thoughts there are a lot of you out there that are still rocking a machine with an FX processor and yeah thanks to the modern CPU instructions most of the software should run just fine but share your thoughts will if you store it down below the comments I read every single comment I might not answer I don't have too much time but I do read every single comment and as always.

AMD FD6300WMHKBOX FX-6300 6-Core Processor Black Edition review

the FX 6300 it's the CPU that my entire site is run off of and it's in the rig behind me so is it worth it and is it worth its  price  let's find out okay so let's get into the review so the first thing you have here is the FX 6300  and then you have the CPU inside now I know I just said that the CPU is in the rig behind me but it's actually not back here I have a phenom and old phenom I want to say yeah it's not a phenom I have an A for 7300 it's just a

dual core processor I just have it in there just so I can have something up to show you guys but here I have the 6300 and if you get a look at the 6300 it's actually kind of different than the Intel CPUs the the AMD CPUs actually use PGA now what I'm doing right now is you're not supposed to do it all I'm rubbing my fingers on the back of the pins now some of you guys who know anything about processors might be current maybe cringing to yourself right now but the thing is is that these pins are actually pretty sturdy that's the one thing I like about this

processor the other processor that I have in the rig behind me now the a4 7300 I actually accidentally been when I first put it into my motherboard because I was new to PC building at the time and I was sitting there I'm like why isn't it going in and I just pushed it down invented P a couple pins and I had to fix those and that was really not that much fun one thing that's nice I like the construction build of this it's actually kind of heavy it's kind of a heavy processor it's actually kind of cool I got for some reason I like it when processors are heavy I just like

when processors have weight to them I don't know why the other thing I like is I like the heat shield this heat shield is actually different from the intel heat shields because the intel heat shields have more of a pyramid they have more like a stacked cake type of design to them well this is more just square the other thing that I like about this is when you're first installing this the CPU for some reason I keep wanting to call these GPUs because I've been doing a lot of

reviews on the 1050 Ti lately but if I accidentally say GPU I mean CPU so the one thing I do like about these CPUs though is that it has a little gold triangle and now all CPUs have the gold triangles to let you know that hey if you're if you're not lining it up properly the processor won't function now on the Intel CPUs I don't have one on me right now I currently gave my Intel i5 one of my older i5 to someone and they are borrowing it for something I don't have an

Intel CPU to show you guys for comparison now but you're just gonna have to take my word for it now now here on the AMD sockets especially on the motherboards the motherboard pins actually are pretty easy to see it's actually pretty easy to see when you're installing this the first time because the first time that I installed the a 473 hundred when I first built my PC along with bending the pins I also put it in backwards and I didn't really know what I was doing so

thankfully I got that corrected because someone was there to help me but still that's the one thing I do like so the FX 6300 let's start getting into the review and the benchmarks so the first thing I did is I ran Cinebench r15 so Cinebench is actually a really good way to show multi-core insane qohor speeds the problem with this version that I have here is that I'm still trying to figure Cinebench out so please forgive me if there's any mispronunciations because I'm still trying to figure this out the only way I've seen that Cinebench is on YouTube and I just

downloaded because I thought hey it might be cool for this review so the FX 6300 came in with a set of bunch score of 416 now for comparison the Xeon X 50 650 has 12 cores in 24 thread it runs at 2.6 6 gigahertz was a section which is actually a lot less than the FX 6300 which runs at 3.5 gigahertz and has I want to say yeah 14 megabytes of total cache and that's divided into 8 megabytes of l3 and the rest is l2 and l1 so compared to the FX 6300 the xeon got 1279 CinemaScore which is pretty explainable because it has 24 threads and the the FX 6300 only

has 6 it has 6 course and 6 threads but if you want to see why it doesn't exactly have that amount of threads you can go ahead and click the link up in the corner because I made a video about this already where I explained the downside to bulldozer so compared to the Z on the FX 6300 actually did kind of poorly it got about 1/3 to 1/4 depending on which test I'm running it got about a third or a fourth of a Xeon now the Intel 3000 K series processor here god excuse me and until 4770k got an 822 score that's actually about twice as much as what the FX 6300

got which like I said early in the video got 416 now the reason that it's doing this is because Len like I've explained in this other video the FX 6300 doesn't really have it's not really a true 6 core processor yes it has 6 cores but it's not really a true 6 core processor like I said if you want to learn more about the specifics of that kind of stuff watch the review so what is the FX 6300 really meant for now like I've said the FX 6300 I've been using it now for jeez about and a half now and I haven't had a problem with it it's actually I do like the processor I'm definitely have a lot

of nostalgia for the FX line especially when I've had different chances to upgrade different opportunities to upgrade to link i3 or i-5 I've stuck with the FX 6300 now a lot of you may be saying oh well if it did so poorly compared to like a Xeon or a low-end i7 why are you sticking with it the simple reason is content creation now for those of you who aren't really savvy on content creation content creation relies on a lot of threads yet generally reviews don't use a lot of high single-core speeds especially with Cinebench this kind of stuff is generally multi-threaded

the FX series has very high multi-threaded performance and that's actually really good for content creation and editing videos and rendering stuff now the reason for that is because a lot of it can be parallelized one of the fans just kicked in the reason that it's actually pretty important is because the FX 6300 has such a really good it actually can beat out some lower and like 20 I 520 500k I want to say it can beat that out and multi-threaded but a single-threaded it

falls behind but for me that's really not that important because the multi-threaded score is really high and like I said it can be paralyzed it's actually really good and the FX 8350 is actually really good as well the FX 4300 i really wouldn't recommend at this point mostly because it's still a quad core processor but essentially you're getting a pentium g45 60 with that chip which isn't exactly the greatest chip ever but I digress if you're looking for something

cheap the FX 6300 is actually really good it's actually a really good value especially when you can buy them on sites such as eBay and Amazon mostly an eBay  but on Amazon it's going for a mostly because of the cryptocurrency mining rage which that's kind of understandable especially with graphics cards now if you've watched my other reviews I'm not gonna get into the cryptocurrency mining stuff and the pricing of computer parts in this video but all I'm saying now is that if you're into content creation this

processor definitely does do a really good job but if you're more into gaming I would go for something like an i-5 2400 or an i-5 2500 K now the reason for that is because gaming generally prefers high single-threaded speeds now the FX 6300 is not bad at gaming by any means it's actually pretty decent if you pair it with something like a 1060 or a 1070 it'll bottleneck the 1070 but the 1060 will actually be a pretty match but cards like what I have behind me the 1050 Ti actually is a really good pair for this the 6300 and other high-end stuff like the 8300 mostly if you're doing content creation but like I said if you're focused on gaming I would save up your

money a little bit and buy like an i3 8100 or buy a cheaper ddr3 platform but I'm gonna go ahead and wrap this video up if you want to do content creation this processor definitely is what you want but if you're more into gaming and that kind of stuff and more into single threaded workloads like internet browsing and stuff I would stick with an Intel processor like a
higher-end until I 3 or an i5 but if you're more into content creation these CPUs definitely are great workhorses like I've said I've been using this for a year and a half I've been editing videos on it it is definitely a dream .
