 ten months ago Intel released kV Lake a new family of processes that was fantastic for gaming but it didn't really do that much to differentiate itself from what we've seen before however things are very different now as we've got AMD's Rison processes offering fantastic value for money more cores and it seems that Intel have answered the call and finally increase the core count of their chips as we now have an i3 processor that has 4 cores rather than 2 and then the 


i5 and i7 having 6 cores rather than four but does this actually make any difference are these chips still good for gaming and ultimately are they worth buying well we start with what you need to get started which unfortunately is a new motherboard as if you have a skylight or cable a motherboard despite the fact that the socket is now identical it's not going to work so you will need something like this this is an ASUS Maximus hero it's a z3 70 board it supports 

overclocking and is going to be a solid option for getting started but of course there are loads of other motherboards that are going to be using this platform so take your pick for my testing I got hold of a 8700 so this is an i7 is not the K overclockable version but don't worry we will be talking about overclocking results a little bit later in the review the 8700 has a base clock of 3.2 gigahertz but it boots up to 4.6 whereas the K version has a base of 3.6 but then it boosts up to

 4.7 both of these are actually lower than the old 7700 K so there is a trade-off for core support clock speed but it is higher than the 8 core rise in 1700 that has a base of 3 gigahertz and then that boosts up to 3.7 for my testing I did grab a rise in 1717 1770 700 K and then the 8700 I paired it with a GTX 1080 and the results were very very interesting in Cinebench as you would expect the 7700 K is lagging behind whereas both the Rison processor and then the new coffee late 8700 were had very similar scores actually with a score of around about 1400 moving on to 

some productivity though and in rendering I was actually really surprised here because while this 7700 K again is outperformed by the other two chips I was expecting the Rison processor to come out on top but it didn't this is all at stock speeds I should make that very clear but actually while they were very similar the new 8700 was actually beating out the Rison processor which is very interesting barring mind that rise ins meant to be all about productivity but as we 

move on to gaming performance this is where things do get very interesting indeed as the 7700 K has always been described as having the magic formula four cores clocked very quickly and despite the fact that the 8700 has more cause but it's clocked a little lower it still puts up a very good fight and performance is more or less --neck --neck until we start looking at 1080p gaming obviously these are all that stock speeds so if you're wanting the absolute fastest you can get you're going to want to overclock all of these as far as they could go which means getting hold 

over 8,700 K versus the non K version we have here but I think it goes to show that most people when it comes to buying a modern CPU if you're running at 1440p or 4k it's not going to make that much difference to be honest which one you go for babe you're going for 144 Hertz 1080p or even 240 this is where you're going to need a lot of GPU horsepower and the absolute fastest gaming CPU you can get and I think that it doesn't matter whether you pick up the 7700 K all 

the 8700 K and you're over pocket as far as it'll go I think you're gonna see very similar results indeed and I don't think that it's going to make that much difference but it's very nice to see that Intel have produced a chip that's better for productivity than before and that has very similar gaming performance when it comes to overclocking obviously I've only got the 8700 so I can't overclock it myself but I have it on very good authority that the 7700 K will go further in terms of overclocking I managed to get mine to around about 5.2 gigahertz where is this 

because of thermal limitations is being reported that it's gonna be between 4.7 and 5 gigahertz depending on the chip you get cooling permitted so on balance I think that Intel have done a fantastic job I don't see that the performance per core has been improved but that doesn't really matter to the average consumer that just wants the fastest frame rates possible and once a chip that's going to be capable for pretty much everything else as well and it's great to see that AMD and Intel are having this little sparring contest because it's going to mean that 
ultimately we're getting better chips and this is exactly what coffee lake proves let me know what you thought of this review by leaving a comment down below.
