Redragon K551 Mechanical Gaming Keyboard for Windows PC Games review

mechanical keyboards an affordable these words don't usually go together very well but for a change I think I can confidently say that I have found a good affordable mechanical keyboard for gaming and productivity let's have a quick look at it so here we have the red dragon whare keyboard as you already know this is mechanical and affordable by the way this also has a TTL version and other LED light options in both dkl and full numpad versions as well which will be linked down below in case you want to check it out with all that out of the way how's the keyboard itself for the majority part of this keyboard it's awesome for its price with an aluminum and an ABS plastic build this thing is a tank there's no flex to this keyboard whatsoever so it's safe to say that this thing can take a beat it as far as macro keys are concerned you might want to take a look somewhere else the switches on this keyboard are red dragons equivalent of Cherry MX blue switches which is a really really good thing in my opinion firstly these are really clicky and feel amazing to type on they make that satisfying mechanical keyboard click resound while typing here you go for sound test

of course not everyone loves it and in case you don't like it just try using headphones with it the best and possibly the most customizable part of this anti keyboard would be the keys because you can literally buy other key caps for Cherry MX switches and put them onto these to change the look and feel of a keyboard itself speaking of changing the keys it comes with a key cap polar out-of-the-box it does what it has to do I don't see it damaging the keyboard or the key caps or even the keys at all it's really simple to use and just like any other simple key capilla it gets the job done as far as other customizations go with respect to the LEDs you need to know that this keyboard is also available in two other formats apart from this standard k550 one red LED only the other two include a version with a different color LED assigned to each drawer the keyboard that cannot be changed called the K 551 R and the other one being a proper full RGB backlit keyboard with individual keys having different LED colors called the k5 51 RGB the only effect the LEDs have to offer on this keyboard is a breathing effect it can be started or stopped by pressing the function and home key together the speed of this effect can further be increase or decrease using the function and minus or equal to signs with an up and down arrows on it when the breathing isn't on the same Keys I use for brightness controls and these brightness controls have 10 levels of brightness including off and fully on you can

also use a function plus roll lock key to turn on and off the backlight at all apart from this the keyboard also supports quick access keys from f1 to f12 these include media keys email home calculator and a full keyboard lock key since this is a gaming keyboard it does support a windows lock key as well this is a really good keyboard but it isn't all fun and games for one the lack of a wrist rest can be a bit of a pain because the keys are at a significant height from the table secondly there's a really slight wobble to the keys as well almost like they're not perfectly seated if the switches properly even though they are it's a very very minor thing and barely noticeable and I'm just being nitpicky here all in all it's a really good and compact keyboard for its size it's a full 104 key keyboard with a smaller than usual chassis RGB LED customizations multimedia keys and oh did I mention it is flash proof as well oh well it is flash proof so if you're clumsy like me you do not need to worry too much about dropping water onto the keyboard because you can just drain it out from the drain holes at the back of the keyboard this is pretty much all I have to say about the keyboard it feels amazing to type on it's got a really good build quality I love typing on it I love the sound it makes I usually use it without a pair of headphones on and from my side I would a hundred percent recommend this keyboard to anyone who's on a really tight budget and is searching for an amazing mechanical keyboard to type on a game with in case you'd really like this keyboard and will get one for yourself

the red dragon Barra mechanical keyboard first off the vara comes in a few different models I have two standard K 551 model with great back lights but did you get one with four RGB and another one with six different backlight colors okay so just some quick information about the bar okay 551 its retaining 447 dollars as custom red dragon switches and as great LED backlighting inside the box you get the manual and the key calf puller and that's pretty much it but anyway the bar is made from metal and ABS plastic which makes you feel very sturdy and makes it able to take a beating the compact form factor gives a nice neat Lucas well and doesn't take up a lot of space on your face mechanical switches or custom ones from red dragon the say it's equivalent to jeremy x green

switches but I found it was a bit closer to Cherry MX blues the switches has a short actuation point but needs a bit more pressure to press the switches has a bit louder fix to them as well so if you don't like loud mechanical keys you should probably not go for this one or just use headphones you're also able to remove the key capture the key cap puller to clean or replace the key caps disgusting features were designed to fit any chair makes key caps so you can just go buy some additional key caps and all fit on the bar keyboard looking underneath the keyboard you get the two front flip out key both feet with nice big rubber grip and at the bottom you get another two rubber grips this group does a very good job of keeping the keyboard in place so you don't actually move eight ball game moving on the cable is a non braided 1.8 liter or 5.9 feet cable with a gold plated USB connector the Varro

has 10 levels of brightness for each red LED backlight you can adjust the brightness by pressing the FN with the equals or minus keys you're also able to turn off the back light by pressing the FN key with the scroll lock the Varro also has a breathing effect that will breathe in and out of the red LED you can do this by pressing the f8 key with the home with that you are also able to adjust the breathing speed by pressing the FN key with the equals o minus key again  but unfortunately that's all for the LED FX of the borrower K 551 at the top of the bar you get the f1 to f12 keys and also double function as your media keys you can use the media keys while pressing the FN key plus one of the 12 earthquakes will be going through the media keys everyone is to open up your media application if to use for volume down a fuse for volume up f4 is for means a five is to stop f6 is for previous f7 is for player fours if eight is for next appliance the open of your email application have 10 is to open up your web browser and fill evidence to lock the entire keyboard and the f12 is to open up the calculator again now for the important parts of the keyboard how is it to game on well like all mechanical keyboards it's a lot better than the normal membrane keyboard the keys feels very precise

and immediately you have to add a bit more pressure to the keys but you luckily get used to it off the
wall same with the large switches while gaming I didn't even hear the switches anymore so the Varia is very nice for gaming but how about for everyday work well this is where the virus struggles for me a bit because the keys requires a bit more pressure to press I sometimes don't press it hard enough but this is more a fault on my side because are not used to these type of switches but if you do like MX blues or greens and the VAR ax will work very nicely for you because after using the bar for a while now what I think once again a bad aspects of our keyboard well the good ones are it comes in a low price and has a strong bolt quality and for the bad ones there's actually more personal stuff the keyboard doesn't really have any big falls to it but what I didn't like was that it didn't have to use be postin lack of LEDs effects and the loud switches so again these are only personal things I didn't like it's not really big issues and it made different from person to person ok so that's my review of the redrock and Barham kankakee board I hope you guys enjoyed it if you did please like share subscribe and comment also if you have a project you want me to review please let me know down in the comments I'll try to get my hands on the product to do a review also check out my Instagram page channel one over Facebook as well leave the link

the red dragon K 551 this is the vara it's very similar to the kala with some minor differences as far as I can tell these switches are actually soldered in so you don't really remove these that easily from this one but besides that we'll talk about a few things I do want to go over a couple things with this keyboard now some of the functions I might show you in this video I realized that other people have maybe different versions of firmware on the keyboard where different functions shortcuts do different things this is odd to me but it's not unheard of I guess as a product progresses with time sometimes different versions are released on it then it's sold so you'll have different function keys and different function combinations that do different things for instance my ability to control the profiles is function and squiggly line whatever that's called and it lights up and it'll start flashing and I'm able to go through and control the profiles on it or I'm supposed to be able to now on my keyboard I think that I've got some sort of botched firmware because I'm able to get to that but I can't change the color assignment of any of the profile keys but you're supposed to be able to now when I tried to research this that's where I noticed that other people had different function and endor function and a different

number or F key and they were able to go through and change their color Lighting's the same way that I should have been able to with this I did check to see if there was a driver download or anything I could do for it but as far as the us site goes for the VAR RGB keyboard it's just download manual so there's no GUI interface that's necessary or implemented for the vara Kay 551 keyboard now it is a  keyboard so some of this is forgivable but for the most part we'll go over a couple little bits of what I know about it I'll try to show you what I can about it and I'm going to admit that I totally skipped over three of the lighting functions in this saw trying to squeeze them in there as tastefully as possible you might notice why I did that now as far as reading off all the 18 different cycle functions they have they're really just names I'll just try to show them to you in this video and I'll also do a sound test in here so you can hear what these are Timah blue switches sound like you do get an instruction booklet with it you also get a key cap puller and the keyboard itself so this is the red dragon cape 551 it is a pretty slick-looking 104 key fulton key layout keyboard I like this keyboard a lot I'm gonna go ahead and say that especially for price those of you on a budget are probably going to enjoy the fact that something like this exists and the RGB loosely used term variant red dragon rarely disappoints me and this keyboard might be the closest they've ever come to actually

disappointing me but it has nothing to do with the construction quality I think that this keyboard especially for the price is one of the most durable feeling most well constructed put together keyboards 104 key layout keyboards that I've ever experienced and that's something that you know I hope says a lot because I do like quality and my keyboards over anything else so the key caps are technically floating key camps but they sit in a recessed bezel which is kind of neat and the whole bezel feeling construction is just really good it's something that I would recommend to people that you know just purely even if there was no RGB lighting LED lighting in this that the construction quality of the keyboard is it's heavy it's durable it's an reinforced plastic shell it's got a aluminum backplate and it just looks and feels really good really quality and I'll go over some more of that in a little bit here when we talk about other things like how it doesn't slide across the desk as easily as a lot of the keyboards i've tried recently so red dragon gets big kudos and you're on point for that as far as your construction quality goes as always now the keyboard uses Oh Timmy blue switches which is something that's pretty common in keyboards in this range and we'll take a sound test and listen to those in just a minute as I finally decided to use somebody that's not a professional chicken pecker like myself and Tim ibly switches are something we see in a lot of these more budget and keyboards they are cross stem compatible switch caps so that you can replace them with other things because I'm also going to cover something about the font that red dragon is insistent about using but first let's take a listen real quick like I promised so something worth mentioning about these key caps here's

they use this overly accentuated gamer font which we've seen on a trending kind of style with a lot of the budget keyboards I'm not necessarily a fan of that and again just kind of talking about how well it holds the desk the rubber feet on the bottom and on the riser stance make it so it just doesn't slide so easily there's two small ones in the front surprisingly small grip very well in the bank the riser stands are coated and covered with a nice rubber material that also helps prevent them from sliding around on the table on the desk whatever you have it set on no need for an extra mouse mat to help hold it in place really really good I like that a lot it does have a gold plated USB to help people make feel better about Poland because gold plated conductivity is supposed to be better but the downside to this is you don't get that braided cable at this price point it is a six foot USB cable that's affixed to the back of the keyboard non-detachable non removable like we've seen in other ones the lighting features on the keyboard are great I think that it's very good very well done everything is even across the board they didn't try to make the caps more than they could be the LED flickering that you might see in this video just as a side note was because of the cameras shutter recording speed you won't see that in person I apologize if it looks bad there are four levels of brightness I guess if you count off that would make five so you get these really decent ranges of brightness and you also get five levels of speed so if you wanted to slow it down usually the slowest level on other keyboards would be like a pause so if you wanted to pause the lights in a place but that's not the case on this keyboard it just goes from slowest to slow to a medium to a fast to the fastest and I think that you know that's a pretty decent range it's all very smooth and all the transitional effects that doesn't look choppy or
underwhelming ly disappointing so that's something that's worth mentioning to the lighting effects just look really good now take a moment here I'm gonna go through a couple of these lighting features I did miss doing the third to the top there which I believe is the end button and I apologize I'll try to fit those in maybe at the end of the video and show you and while I will mention I could tell you what all of these lighting features are called they're in the booklet and every keyboard calls them something different to me it's really a matter of just finding something that you like that's interesting to you I imagine most people that are going to sit down with the keyboard will go over that I also do want to cover a little bit about the static lighting which I'll talk about at the end and a reason I feel that this keyboard is maybe just lacking something of a firmware update fix there's just maybe a problem with my variant because I couldn't even show the profile color coding that's something that I've always been able to do in red dragon keyboards that I couldn't do here but I'll cover that in just a moment as you see the static lighting part come up in just a moment  so static lighting default starts
on pink and I was like cool alright that's Nate we can see what other static lighting features we have with this here's the problem though I only had a handful of colors between green blue pink yellow and then we're back to green so I'm missing things like red which I found very odd and it just kind of screamed at me there's something kind of going on with this keyboard that hopefully you won't have that issue with the kala the Indra the Hera they've all been great keyboards and the hair of course is seven or six color keyboard when it comes to their RGB keyboards you kind of hope for something a little more in the realm of what you were expecting I guess I don't know if that makes sense so I feel like I'm definitely missing some features here especially including the ability to set profiles on this which I didn't show because there's really nothing to show other than I couldn't get it to cooperate but even with these shortcomings on this specific one which I'm pretty sure are probably just limited to the one that I have I would say that the keyboard is still working for 45 bucks you still have a ton of features on there and if you're interested in something that looks good and just functions nice I would

say it's definitely pretty good so I'll definitely reach out to red dragon 2 and say hey look this is my problem check out this video see these problems I have do you have something I can do to change this fix this make it better and I hope to hear back from them so anyways I know I kind of said my negative there but I do like the keyboard and I think that for 45 bucks it's definitely a wart the keyboard be sure and go check it out if you're interested in it just here's to hoping that you don't encounter maybe some of the issues I've had and I'm gonna continue to try to see if there's a way to resolve it and once I figure that out if there is like a firmware update or something I can do I'll definitely post down below how I did it what I did and maybe even make a video about that in case other people with red dragon products have experienced this in the past a lot of the instruction booklet is pretty generic and a lot of it just covers things like a mouse like when you open it up and it says you know for the mouse do this and I'm thinking what it's not a mouse its keyboard so it's just the generic instruction booklet that has generic programmability codes and it to tell you kind of what they should do in general anyways guys that's pretty much all I have for the red dragon k5 51 Vera if you're interested in it I'll put a link to it down below you guys have a great day night whatever it is and I'll see you in the next  article  that I do
