hey guys  today I'm going to be unboxing an Intel Core i7 8 gen processor really excited for this processor so more specifically it's the Intel Core i7 - 8700 K so as you can see on the side 3.2 gigahertz 12 megabytes cache it's got the LGA 1 1 v 1 you can see all that right here on the packaging as well cool little box really like the color scheme going on the side here there's one side there's the other side showing you six core overclockable a bunch of other stuff and we'll go 

to the back of it for you to see great processor the link to this will be my review description below so go ahead check it out on Amazon and see if it's the right computer for your build or just to upgrade your current one so we're looking forward to opening this up first thing about the box your installation instructions are the three-year warranty and you're awesome intel i7 8th gen sticker pretty sweet and last but not least the processor itself we're not going to take it out of 

this casing right now I don't not want to risk damaging any of the pins or anything but really a great product great processor good way to it you can tell it's heavy but it's heavy duty so really a great processor can't wait to get it in the computer so we're really excited for this and really appreciate you guys  check it out in the link below it'll take you to Amazon you can do some more shopping .


 the in some 8700 K now this is actually a pretty impressive bump up from what we've seen in the last give or take five years from this sort of platform now there is a few things I do want to clarify in this review especially with regards to the socket and the chips and compatibility areas but first of all let's take a look at the specs so for this 8700 ke you're looking at a six core 12 thread monster you're also looking at a base clock of 3.7 gigahertz only a hundred megahertz higher than the horizon 7 1800 X just to point out and with a single core boost clock of 4.7 

gigahertz considerably higher than the rise ins about 4.1 you're also looking at a lazy 5 watt TDP 12 Meg's of total cache and you're also looking at only 16 piece aliens available directly to the CPU itself from the motherboard the extra 24 lanes because they do claim up to 40 and they're press materials it actually comes through the chipset which is actually heavily heavily bottlenecks by the DMI 3.0 X 4 interface which as far as I'm aware anyway is fairly equivalent to basically PCIe x4 so all of those extra 24 PCIe lanes they're going through basically an x4 

PCIe connection to the CPU give or take anyway so that's something to bear in mind if you're looking for extra expansion more than just two graphics cards just to expand on that a little bit that means if you're using even just one of those M naught 2 SSD modes as well as say a SATA hard drive and your rear Land and your built-in audio the audio in the LAN the USB ports and the SATs are all gonna be stealing bandwidth from their m2 SSD also if you're thinking about running m2 SSD you're nvme rate that's also gonna be running at 2x configure it you each SSD 

is gonna be running it using only 2 PCIe lanes and that's not including what's gonna be stolen from that by the SATA ports that you know rear audio USB ports and everything else that's connected through the chipset now as I said the actual CPU itself is listed at launch that's likely gonna translate in the UK as they seem to basically pick the same number and just change the sign of the front there's a bit of a strange run but nonetheless that's the sort of price you were here when it comes to pricing for the motherboards as I understand 

that some companies are changing them slightly and all of them are changing the price is to go up a little bit but some of them are changing it by you know a kind of thing where some of them are changing for and the different models no I want to make a little bit of another clarification especially on the sockets a the things well this still is a socket 1150 one LGA platform you are actually looking at different pillars and a different actual server retention mechanism or retention pins such that you will not be able to use a 7700 

K or 67 inch K or any of those sorts of chips and a Zed 370 board and likewise you will not be able to put a eighth-generation coffee like CPU into a Zed 270 or had 170 motherboard so with all the clarifications and these specs out of the way let's take a look at the performance starting off with Cinebench you can see that this performs pretty damn excellently in both single threaded and multi-threaded applications now when you're looking at the single thread to score you will notice that it is slower than the 7700 K at least for the OC profile anyway and that's 

just down to the boost and base clocks when it comes to a sushi rule bench actually kind of blues a lot out of the water here and thanks to it's just sheer you know clock speed improvement even though it has to last course than the 17 it's 20 X that actually is basically on par with it which is really very impressive at least in this benchmark when it comes to 3d mark again you're actually seeing a slightly PIP the post of the 17 it's 20 X which is the 8 core 

variants rather than the 6 core and off to the 6 core is well below that and becomes the gaming results it's pretty much as you'd expect realistically you're not gonna see a massive difference here this is at 1080p and we'll be doing future videos with telly see eyes testing between the 1800 X and the 8700 K to give you a little bit of a better idea all resolutions about this is tele P with a GTX 980 again in Raleigh you're seeing a very similar result with 123 FPS which is again is very similar to a lot of the other results to you'll see here and nothing really within you know 

more era that you won't notice now as you've seen I didn't include overclocker results here there's a couple of reasons for that one I don't have a suite of overclock for results for the other chips are in but my graphs there so I don't wanna give you self incomplete data there and also the chip itself just runs ridiculously hot it still seems to suffer from the same issue as we likely see once people start deleting these but just at stock settings everything okay I manually set everything to auto in the BIOS I did have a strange bug we're all course we're running at four 

point seven Hertz which doesn't mean that it seems to be fairly possible but even still I saw a max temperature of 94 degrees Celsius yeah 94 I mean that that wasn't alone either all of the the package temperature was lady degree Celsius and the lowest temperature I observed just running Cinebench this wasn't prime95 just Cinebench the lowest temperature so there was I think in the area of 87 degrees Celsius so this is not so cool chip on stock settings and you're really gonna have to push you know some custom water cooling or something to get any sort of 

overclock out of it so they've got that other way more of my thoughts here but there's a couple of things that would have hit on first of all on the motherboard front because for all intents and purposes these are the same motherboards that you'll see on a Zed 170 hours at 270 platform just with that slightly reconfigured socket there sure they might have better power phases or you know more robust power phases for that higher core code delivery in fact I measured our at least that hardware wallets are measured 140 watts of power usage from the chip under load 

so that's fairly high especially considering of this is a mainstream platform board but nonetheless from what I can see there really isn't much of a difference at least in terms of features anyway compared to these at 270 boards and it feels like they're just kind of locking you out with that different a pennant configuration and they don't know if that was really necessary or if it was something that Intel are trying to do just to try and push forward the 

motherboard your motherboard se was kind of thing or whether there is actually a necessity to do it well that's your chip side themselves I'm really glad to see Intel coding f6 core in the shree market with that said the 7800 X the six core that they launched about three months ago now that chip is basically obsolete now I mean sure if you bought one you probably don't be too disheartened because the e 700 K is only a slight bit faster and realistically you can overcome 

your chip to get the same sort of performance from it anyway but you know from someone whose there's no looking at that market and is looking to buy a new PC or a new motherboard and processor these sort of motherboards are considerably cheaper and yet you know so is the actual chip itself here you get better performance out of the box from the mainstream platform rather than the high-end desktop platform which is really a very confusing thing and I don't I don't really understand that perhaps that's part of the sort of rush to beat rising I just don't 

know I'm also fairly disappointed that Intel hasn't really seemed to learn this lesson from the last generation of ships where these are running ridiculously hot and of course this is so dissipating 140 watts of actual power here which is kind of insane and also and I was using an air cooler for my testing and it wasn't you know massively beefy one so that may come in - you know that may be a factor but you're still gonna need easily 240 if not 280 or even three hundred and sixty millimeter water cooling radiators available to you if you want to pick up 

one of these CPUs and especially if you want to overclock it so with that said what is my scoring well for me I think this is gonna be a 4/5 for money I think in terms of performance it will be a 5 in the terms of functionality because you're really not getting anything new besides the extra cores here I'm going to go with a 4 styling it's a CPU so it will be a 5 and I think in terms of texture maybe score it's gonna be a 4.5 at a gold award it's certainly a fantastic chip I think it plays very well into Intel's hands to compare itself to horizon but when it comes to overall value 

money standpoint when it comes to the fact that you have to buy a brand-new motherboard even if you already bought 7700 K a couple of months ago and also the fact that they've now made a chip that they lodged only like three months ago and basically obsolete it's kind of crazy then of course if you do want to see any more about these they're 370 motherboards especially these two for resuce the review for the video for those two boards are coming at the exact same time as this review so feel free to take a look at those I also recommend you take a look at a live

everyone so while back I talked about the new Intel eighth generation CP users potentially one of the most exciting generational leaps in years Core i5 and i7 with migrate from 4 to 6 cores 12 threads in total on the i7 a notional 50% increase in basic computational power but then again Intel's skylake X and indeed AMD's Verizon have come along both offering plenty of cause tons of processing power but relatively little or indeed no improvement for gamers up against the 

core i7 7700 K now today I'm reviewing the 8700 K and I can say that it's the many core CPU that gamers have been waiting for tons of extra power a noticeable upgrade for gaming great overclocking and plenty more besides but first up let's take a look at the system i've built to test this cpu mainboard wise the seuss has supplied to the Maximus 10 hero here based on the new Z 370 chipset yes it's true I'm afraid it's got the same socket as Z 270 and indeed z170 but you can't run 8th gen core CPUs in those older boards meaning that you need to buy one of these I 

mean people will talk about incremental boosts to CPU but it's actually the board's that are far more of a concern with this generation you need a new one point-blank I mean the suit has done a great job with everything a motherboard needs to do here plenty of Io good overclocking control headers for the increasingly popular all-in-one coolers RGB lighting but yes it is a necessary investment for coffee Lake I've used my usual Corsair Vengeance lpx sticks here rated at 3000 megahertz so all my existing benchmark data transfers over for the comparisons 

here calling wise Corsair has also supplied 2h 110 i GTX all in one solution and if you want to push the 8700 K to its limits I do recommend a seriously meaty thermal solution like this one so let's kick off with some basic benchmarks starting off with cine bench tested in single and multi-core rendering I've compared the 8700 K at stock speeds here its predecessor the six-course 7800 X from the enthusiast skylake X line and of course risin 7 1800 X no real surprises 

here at the 4.7 gigahertz single core turbo propels it beyond the 7700 K while the extra two cos deliver almost 50% of extra performance core and clock refinements versus skylake X also see higher scores in both single and multi ferry performance the top-end Rison still commands a lead in multi thread performance but it's looking fragile elsewhere review encoding with handbrake then now this is the tool that we use ourselves for delivering our review content and 

we provide both h.264 and HEV C and codes on our website digital foundry dotnet the results here actually quite remarkable of course the 7700 K is history video encoding just scales well across lots of cores but essentially in h.264 that 8700 K at stock speeds is a match for risin 7 1800 X and it beats the 6 core i7 HEV see results based on 4x 265 encoder use AVX instructions extensively now this is an area where Intel has dominance over AMD and the results show Rison offers performance a touch faster than the 7700 K but the 8700 K has a 25-point lead 

remarkable stuff these are great results for a chip at stock speeds showing that the 8700 K is pretty awesome for productivity but what about gaming well that's where we're going to focus and it's here where the story gets even more fascinating ok so let's quickly talk about how we ascertain how fast a cpu is with gaming workloads essentially we pair the processor with an overclocked Titan X Pascal running ultra level settings at 1080p resolution the job of the CPU is to process game logic and prepared raw calls for the GPU so our aim here is to run the 

highest fidelity simulation on the CPU and sent out the densest scenes for the GPU to render by using Titan X at a relatively low resolution the GPU is no longer the bottleneck for the most part instead its CPU and ddr4 system Ram bandwidth now most of the time in our lessons set up the GPU is the bottleneck not the CPU but when buying a processor it's really all about how much overhead you have and our tests are about measuring that overhead as best as we can but even when we do this sometimes you won't see much difference at all case in point the division by Ubisoft I mean we've got the 8700 K up against existing 4 6 & 8 core CPUs here and 

effectively there's no difference none well ok by the end of the bench this a maximum four frames per second delta but nothing that the human eye can really perceive across the run of play and sometimes the differentials are there but very slight as you can see here in Assassin's Creed unity you can perceive kb lake and coffee lake inching ahead of the two Scylla gex chips here but again the Delta is tiny so who cares now some might say that the differential is there but largely academic however in a test like ashes of the singularity CPU benchmark you do see 

coffee like having a big big advantage over its challenges it beats the 7700 K and seventy eight hundred eggs which weirdly have much the same performance profile and even monsters the 78 20 X by a whopping 17% even though it has two fewer cause now this benchmark is a heavily multi-threaded workload that flies on cores and frequency and also l3 cache memory an area where skylake X does fall a bit short now we have Crysis 3 for it's super reliance and cores and threads and the 8700 K produces some incredible results here the range of this benchmark is 

such that we need to kind of compress the grid somewhat to fit everything in but even so the coffee lake advantage is impossible to ignore in these eventers areas like this show the 7700 K at the bottom of the pile as you might expect the two skylake X is in the middle but the 8700 K is way in front by the end of the bench that 8700 K is 28% faster than its predecessor a result that betters Intel's own gaming benchmark a 25% Jen on Jen boosting Gears of War 4 but it's also 14% faster than the eight core 78 20x amazing stuff but average frame rates only really tell 

some of the story okay so buying a fast CPU is essentially about overhead about keeping frame rates as high as possible in the highest stress test scenarios so let's freeze frame right here 100 frames per second on the 77 100k 152 on the 8700 K nice round numbers they're showing that in the moment improvement in a CPU heavy scene also note the frame time graph as we move from four to six to eight cores on the existing Intel chips the frame times smooth out and 8700 K offers the smoothest frame times of all so yeah Intel talks about 25% increases in gaming 

performance and we can replicate that on several titles but what's really important are those in the moment frame rates frame times they have a ton better in the most stressful scenes and that's what you actually feel when you play moving on The Witcher 3 it's another game that loves threads bandwidth and frequency the lead here is monstrous 171 FPS on average a stunning result for our novigrad city test run which is one of the heaviest CPU bound parts of the game you'll note that the eight core 78 20 X is also beaten significantly once again nothing 

gets close to the 8700 K it's remarkable finally let's talk Far Cry primal it's a game that actually thrives on single thread power cache and system memory bandwidth skylake X and I have to say risin - well the many core designs they're really struggle with this game there is no massive leap here with the 8700 K as you can see it's basically a touch faster than the 7700 K but it illustrates that Intel has delivered a many core design that keeps the strengths of the last gen i7 so even if a game doesn't fully exercise all the cores and threads it's still got it in terms of pure 

single core power amazing stuff and remember that this isn't the case with skylake or indeed horizon okay so all of these tests have been carried out at stock speeds but there's a lot of overclocking potential here - first of all engage the XMP profile for your memory and you get a feature called enhanced turbo which is basically easy overclocking with the board running all cores at the single max core turbo speed which in this case is a whopping great 4.7 gigahertz or if you prefer go hell for leather and aim for 5 gigahertz I did this with 1.32 volts a bit high for my liking but heat was contained and the results were great let's go back to the benchmarks 

there and check out the scaling and this time we'll stack it up against the eight core i7 78 20 X and a 10 core I 970 900 X check out the results here single thread power is way ahead according to city bench and at 5 gigahertz it's not a million miles away from the 78 20 X in terms of multi thread performance but it's the video encoding that I found really interesting the 87 100k can Duke it out with the 78 20x in h.264 and it's not a million miles away from the 7900 X either meanwhile the super-heavy x265 HEV C tests show a closer grouping of results not bad right so

 what about gaming i've got stock performance here with 26 66 megahertz ram stacked up against a 5 gigahertz OC with faster modules you get a boost but not a massive one as you can see here in Crysis 3 against a maxed out 7700 K and a similarly maxed horizon 7 well there's no competition now wiesen 7 works best with Crysis threes love from many cores but whether you're at stock or overclocked that 8,700 case screams ahead the Far Cry primal of benchmark also illustrates many core processors weakness in single threaded games with rise and 

overclocked really struggling here but again you'll note that there's not a huge boost with the 8700 K at 5 gigahertz now personally I'd be sticking with all core turbo and decent memory as a good compromise but I also noted memory bandwidth on your ddr4 isn't hugely impactful this time around across our suite of games just keep away from slow bargain-basement memory at 21 33 megahertz coffee Lake I 5s and I sevens even allow the locked chips to run with 2666 memory and that's what I'd recommend as a baseline this benchmark shows us running stock 

clocks at 21 33 26 66 and 3,000 megahertz bandwidth and I've tossed in a 5 gigahertz overclock running with slower memory there are two major takeaways from this kind of testing so here in the bandwidth happy far cry primal there's not a huge Delta in performance actually but faster memory is making a small difference but the main takeaway is that wasting all of that energy in overclocking does nothing if you don't increase memory bandwidth to match the witcher 3 benchmark we have monsters bandwidth and once again you can see that faster ram really is 

more important than overclocking these are the kind of results that show the advantages of faster memory to its largest extent and again overclocking does nothing without wide bandwidth ddr4 license a Tomb Raider shows more restraint boosts in terms of memory scaling but once again five gigahertz overclock is just a waste of power unless you have the memory bandwidth to match it okay and the final big topic I want to cover basically if you already have an i7 should you upgrade well this is a huge gen on Gen upgrade in my opinion but I ran some 

benches showing how older chips compared to the stock 8700 K now to make it a fair fight I've run them all at 4.5 gigahertz and paired them with fast Ram I mean look even the 3770k steel hands in great performance and there'll be many titles like the division here where you won't see much if any difference it's a similar situation with AC unity though you will notice that gaps are starting to appear in those lines as the gen on Gen increases in both poor capability and memory bandwidth start to kick in oh and remember that 2400 megahertz is pretty much as far 

as ddr3 goes ddr4 still has more to give with many kits that are faster than 3 thousand megahertz which I've tested here Crysis 3 yeah right I mean the 8700 K is running at stock speeds here and it's lightyears ahead 3770k 4790k still good chips at saber seems like this really illustrate just how much faster the 8th gen core can be and it's the same situation with the ashes of the singularity CPU test Ivy Bridge and Devil's Canyon much of a muchness the 7700 K is basically on par with the 6700 K and here you can see the core and memory bandwidth 

improvements really shine for the coffee like 8700 K it is just on another level so yeah I'd say that you're getting a really big generational leap here I mean productivity performance is great overclocking is pretty awesome but our focus is primarily on gaming and coffee Lake is delivering the many core experience you'd expect in fact the games are so big I'm sort of left to wonder just how good is the six core i5 8600 K going to be and then there's the i-5 8400 the 

cheapest six poor chip intel hairs I can't wait to test that one out that's for sure okay so I've got i five testing to be getting on with clearly but in the here and now I'd say there's a definite excitement level two Coffee Laker I'm really looking forward to seeing more but that's all from me.
