today we are checking out the new 12 nanometer version of the horizon 5 1600 and despite the name this is actually a new CPU it's only been on the market now for a few months ideally I would have liked to have covered it a bit sooner than I have but unfortunately isn't available in Australia so we've had to source one from overseas and it's taken a little over a month to get here my shipping options were limited anyway the good news is we finally have this strange CP on hand for testing but before any of that today's review is 



probably do a quick recap first the horizon 5 1600 that was released back in April 2017 for two hundred and twenty dollars us and it's of course based on the original 14 nanometers in architecture it's six cores came clocked at 3.2 gigahertz with a base with an all core boost clock of 3.4 gigahertz and it was cooled using the Wraith spire a year later it was replaced by the risin 5 2600  it too was a 6 core processor but this time featured updated 12 nanometers n plus caused for the clock speeds that ran in a base of 3.4 gigahertz with an all core of 3.7 

gigahertz and because the newer process was more efficient AMD downgraded the cooler to the wraith stealth the following year which was 2019 we of course got these n2 based processors and the replacement he was the Rison 5 3600 another part what we also got last year was a sort of Verizon 5 1600 refresh bizarrely aimed ear released a really cheap version of the Rison 5 2600 but just called it the risin 5 1600 now commonly referred to as the risin six 800 af it's very different to the original risin five 1600 a II model despite the name this really is a second gen 

risin part essentially it is an r5 2600 with a very slight decrease in clock speed apparently AMD didn't have enough 14 millimeter wafers available to keep produced in the r5 1600 on that process so they've shifted 12 nanometers very strange that one didn't even know they are still making Rison 1000 series parts but apparently they are and they've chose to call this one which is as I said it's now technically a risin 520 600 with a slight clock speed so decrease our rather 

than refresh it as a rise in 3000 series part or even call it a rise in 2000 series part they're calling at the r5 1600 very bizarre not sure why they've chosen to do that but they have just a very odd situation so I guess at this point you could be asking yourself why do you care about any of this why do you care that anybody's making new products and then selling them under old names does seem kind of productive but hey it's AMD they do strange things all the time well the reason why you should care is the price this slightly under clocked risin 520 600 


 that's brand-new so yeah you can buy a Zen plus 6 or 12 thread CPU brand new the original 14 nanometer Rison 5 1600 was already a great deal a little over  and the rise in 5 2600 was a killer deal  but the risin 5 1600 AF blows them both completely out of the water unfortunately while great news for us viewers this amazing value rise and 5 processor isn't available in all regions and my fellow Aussies will miss out I myself had to pay way more than what these things are worth to review 

it because sadly they just aren't available locally I have asked AMD if the AF variant will be coming down under but for now it seems like the answer is no so yeah that really does suck now before we get is the blue bar graphs here's a quick look at how these 1600 AF clocks compared to these 1600 a 8 as well as the 2600 running a heavy blender workload we see that the original 1600 operates at three point four gigahertz whereas the new AF model maintained three point seven gigahertz and then the 2600 runs 100 megahertz higher at 3.8 gigahertz so it looks like 

the 1600 AF will be worst case up to three percent slow in the 2600 out of the box but it,s okay so armed with that information let's jump into some blue bar graphs though please note we are going to power through these results as they are particularly surprising and probably won't require too much explanation for testing I'm using the gigabyte X 570 or s master with 16 gigabytes of G skills Flair exterior for 3,200 memory the graphics card of choice is the GeForce r-tx 2080 ti first up we have the Cinebench our 20 multi-core performance and 

here the 1600 AF basically matched the 2600 less than a 1% margin in it this means out of the box the AF was 12% faster than the original 1600 now for single core performance the 2600 was one-and-a-half percent faster than the 1600 AF and that makes the new 12 nanometer 1610 % faster than the original version running 7-zip we see basically identical compression performance again the AF is about 10% faster than the original 1600 for the decompression test the 2600 was again one and a half percent fast and the 1600 AF which means the AF was 

9% faster than the original 1600 the last application benchmark I bothered running was blender here the 1600 AF was about 1% slower than the 2600 so no real surprises there time for some gaming benchmarks and first up we have Assassin's Creed Odyssey and the 1600 AF delivers basically the same performance as the r5 2600 making it a little bit faster than the original 1600 as expected the margins are also very similar at 1440p performance in battlefield 5 is also very similar between the original 1600 the 1600 AF and the r5 2600 and of course it's 

the same story at 1440p so I suspect with a lesser graphics card you can expect to see no real difference at all the 1600 AF matched the 2600 with identical performance and shut off the Tomb Raider making a few frames fast in the original model and we see basically identical margins at 1440 we also see identical gaming performance from the 1600 AF when compared to the 2600 when playing at the division 2 the results at 1440p are no different and here we see more evidence at the 1600 and 1600 AF will really deliver a very similar gaming experience 

with a lower tier GPU next up we have far cry new dawn and yet pretty similar sight here the 1600 AF basically matches the 2600 making it a little faster than the original which is of course the true 1600 1440p doesn't offer up any surprises so just more of the same here here we see a nice 13% boost to the 1% low performance for the 1600 AF over the 1600 and hitman to attorney P so that's a pretty solid gain there and I meant the Refresh 1600 was able to basically match the 2600 and we see that the 1% low-margin extended to 16% at 1440p but overall 

margins were much the same the 1600 AF also demonstrated good 1 % low performance improvements in total war three kingdoms beating the 1600 by 16% margin so EP coming in 1 to 2 FPS behind the 2600 the margins are reduced slightly a 1440p but overall a very similar story well there's my quick look at how the horizon 5 1600 AF performs and the results went pretty much as expected it's an r5 2600 with a very minor reduction in clock speed speaking of which you can of course overclock this part if you want the 1600 AF is a fully unlocked Rison 

processor and my chip hit 4.2 gigahertz using 1.5 volts and that is the same overclock I achieved by my risin 5 2600 retail part that I have on hand didn't bother going into all those results because it's more of the same hit the same frequency you get very very similar performance at that frequency and the other reason I'd like to delve into overclocking too much with these sort of CPU reviews is that your chip may not do 4.2 gigahertz it may only do 4 gigahertz or it could do better again it's silicon quality here so they call the silicon lottery so yet your results may 

vary but I'd expect around 4.1 to 4.2 gigahertz and based on reports that I'm seeing 4.2 gigahertz does seem to be a pretty strong overclock and that certainly was the case with the 2600 CPUs and we've tested I've bought about probably a dozen of those now having overclocked all of them but did overclock about half a day of them they all did around 4.1 4.2 gigahertz rather than five 1600 retail chip that does 4 gigahertz on the dot I can't really push it above that without compromising stability and that seems to be about as good as those chips do

 there are reports of some chips going higher but I think the sort of realistic overclock you can hope to achieve would be 4 gigahertz with that particular part so the 1600 AF is not only cheaper than the original 1600 and faster out of the box but it should also overclock a bit better as well at the very least your chances of hitting or exceeding 4 gigahertz are greatly improved as for power consumption it's in line with what we've seen from the 2600 just a little bit better out of the box due to slightly decreased clock speeds but this can vary depending on silicon quality 

for budget builders with access to the 1600 AF at  there is simply no better choice as I said earlier the r5 2600 was already amazing valued so the 1600 AF which is basically the same CPU for a further off it's just an insane deal has to be said AMD really is putting the hurt on Intel with these parts at least yeah lower end CPUs your core i5s and lower because right now something like the core i5 9600 K that and then the locked core i5 9400 F that comes in at 165 dollars and I expect both these six core six threaded processes to

 actually end up being slower than the 1600 AF for gaming within a few years from now so for me that just makes the rise in processor a better buy not just because it's significantly cheaper well that's the main reason but also the fact that if you're planning on keeping it for 1-2 years I expect by that point that the 6800 AF will be the superior gamer at least in the majority of really demanding titles overall though as I said Verizon v 1600 AF is just an amazing and valued product I'm just very dirty on AMD for not bringing it to Australia and in other regions 

that could benefit from having an affordable 6 chord 12 rise and CPU on the menu who knows it may end up coming down under or to your region if you don't have it now but yeah I wouldn't remain too hopeful on that one I've asked AMD they haven't really haven't given me too much information apart from the fact that there's no plans at this point so yeah probably not going to happen I think they're quite content selling us the rise at this point so that's a good price I guess we can't 

hate on AMD too much over that one but still the 6100 AF bit jealous of us viewers who have access to that on Amazon for eighty five dollars that's just an incredible Buy please AMD give some love Down Under send a couple of a mile way seems like they're not going to but we can at least beg I suppose .

we got her to test we have rise in five 1600 and a rise in five 1600 we bought these online we'll have those linked for you and what we're going to do today is we're going to do a unboxing and then later on this week we're going to return back to you with some overclocking numbers in it but also since we bought those and we don't need to rely on AMD samples what we have right there is a big box from AMD and that is our risin 5 reviewers sample kit and what we're going to do since we bought our own risin 5 CPUs what we're going to do is give away this kit next 

week unopened and we'll talk a bit about that a little bit later on so we're back on the test bench with the to AMD risin 5 1600 CPUs that we got in this morning 3.2 gigahertz base 3.6 precision boost and later this week we are definitely going to be putting these on a test bench and seeing what we can overclock these two so we'll definitely have data on that this week for right now we just wanted to kind of take a closer look at what was in the box and show you 

exactly what to expect and how to install the cooler here it's not going to be much different than what we saw last time but I know there's a lot of you that are probably coming into the AMD fold that are not familiar with this at all so I'll give you a little bit better a little bit better instruction at it last time it's a rise in 5 CPUs the first one we've seen it's a rise in 5 1600 this one is made in China not that we saw any difference on that last time but that's kind of worth noting so what's going to be different this and what we showed in our last review was this is the

 Wraith cooler but this one is actually a tad bit different on air so initially looking at this it looks exactly the same surely the only difference here is that we don't have the LED ring on this one so you'll notice that you don't have a plug down here or I think it was over here on the last one and you only got one cord so that's that's the big difference okay it's no big difference there this is cooler still it's still uh it's rated at 95 watts as the other one was and so let's show you how to install it real quick and we'll cover that veteran we did last time because we left out a 

couple of steps all right so the board out in front of me right here is the Asus crosshair six hero and if you took it out a package this is exactly how it looked okay last time we didn't show you this and like I said in a bunch you guys are probably new to this so a lot of a lot of the coolers on the market will use these tabs here on these mounting brackets that come stock on this board and our cooler is not use those right let me show you how this works and I'm going to use

 a Philips head screwdriver and simply remove the two screws either side when you're doing this be careful not to drop the screws on the motherboard anytime and God forbid don't do this with the board plugged in either that's not smart at all so you see once you get those two screws out that bracket comes right off there not a problem at all on most of these boards you will find that the plate behind these boards is actually glued on this is what the plate will look like the backplate this one doesn't have any adhesive on it but most of the he's probably will headed he 

to have adhesive on them and so I'll show you why that's somewhat important because it makes it easier to mount so we got screws off that one lift it right up it's out of the way so if these do have adhesive on them you'll notice that these don't move right because that backplate that hold down plate is it here to the back of the board so that makes these much easier to install makes it cooler is much easier to install last time I showed you one that was not done that way because we'd already ripped it apart to do water cooling on it so next thing you want to do 

when you insert your cooler or you're in central processor before your cooler obviously you always want to make sure you've grounded yourself off to something metal in the environment that's preferably plugged in the wall like a power supply or something take your processor out you will notice that you process your hands a little gold mark over in one corner okay so that will line up with a little arrow right here so you will see an arrow there at one corner of your socket and so that's where the arrow goes so when you put this in and align it easily it straight 

and let it fall into the socket for God's sakes don't don't push on it now once once you're down into the socket like this I highly suggest it is so you know it's in the socket right go ahead and push down with two or three fingers I didn't push down as hard as you want pretty much as long as you're on a good searching on your terp your board then go ahead and lock down your CPU arm that way you know that that processor is flat down in the socket and you're going to get a good contact with all the pins okay so next thing is go back the on the stock cooler we 

already have you already have the Tim on there see it comes off really easily so you can make a mess at this point really easily what you want to do is kind of get down make sure you line up where your posts are going to be to set it make sure you get all that lined up this is so much easier to do outside of the case I highly suggest doing this outside of the case okay so we're going to come back and we bring out here none you can see a little bit better so we're going to come over here you can turn the screws backward while pushing down and so you heard that 

all right so listen so let's do it again I'm going to turn the screws backwards while pushing down and you're going to hear the clunk from the thread catching here comes okay there it is so now I know I can go forward my threads are lined up so I grab about a thread over there and I go diagonal the other side of the board I'm going to do it again there's my thread now I can move for to turn there's thread now go forward let's do it over here there's thread now I go forward okay now what that does is that keeps you from cross threading any of those threads 

and make sure you also get an even count I'm going around so go across I get one two three I'll go across one two three I'm going to go across one two three across one two three okay so you get the idea there and I'm going to go down until all these are flush okay that one's flush that one's tight now once you feel that thread bottom out you do not need to crank on this you're not needing to tighten that on there in any way shape or form okay so now our cooler is in there that thing's not going anywhere that is way it should be mounted now if you're wondering how 

good a mate we get let's actually take this back part and look at it and when you take it apart I'd suggest you kind of do the same if you're checking your mating surface I would suggest you do it the same , now adding adding heat put to this the mates going to look a little bit different then and say if you'd have run it under load for a while I'm going to pull this straight up and let's take a look down on the board so we got a pretty good mate there we pushed out a lot of the extra thermal paste you can see right here around the edges want to 

paste their excess paste on the edges that got pushed out that number one tells us we got a good seat under there let's get that up there you can see we were down really really thin in here as well so let's look at what the cooler looks like so first off you're going to notice almost immediately that the copper slug there almost looks naked that we put so much the paste out so I mean we get a tremendous amount of paste there in that corner tremendous amount here so our mating on these is extremely good now obviously if you take yours off and check it then you 

need to reapply that temp do not put it back on without reapplying the thermal interface material so that's it that is the rise in v 1600 unboxing showed you how to install the cooler properly right out of the box and one thing we talked about the beginning of the video is hey so AMD Rison reviewers sample giveaway since we bought all of our samples we're going to be using we'll be using this with Corsair Vengeance Ram as well what we're going to do is I'm
